Post Cold front at Pyramid
This weekend we had two days of cold north wind, plus an influx of lots of new, cold water at Pyramid.
There are still a lot of green weeds everywhere to 25'.
Saturday we caught fish, but Sunday, when the wind was stronger, we all struggled.
We got dinks in 30' on hula grubs.
There was no shad anywhere on the graphs.
What happened?

Fiishing was good for numbers considering how slow it was down here. Both my kids caught plenty fish it was the first time there. Planning another camping trip to go back in the spring.

I hear that Jeff! You'd think after 40 years that the bass would have figured out the blade thing but Nooooo.....Gotta love those northern strain fish.

Mark,

Didn't you say the lake came up a few feet over night? That incoming water was probably cold and that dropped water temp and shut them down till they got used to it.

Yea Kelly you think they would have got bait wise over the years but havent which is a good thing for us. Now I wish our lakes lakes like Castaic was like that. No, these damn fish get smart fast!

Well Mark,

I’m with Jeff on this one. Years back I went with some friends to fish the Stratos World Championship at Old Hickory in Tennessee. It’s a huge lake (Cachuma would just be a Marina!) The lake is controlled by the TVA which is Federally mandated to keep a certain level of water because it is an inland waterway which has barge traffic on it. It is not uncommon for the TVA because of seasonal rains to open up one or two of the lakes and dump the water into Old Hickory. Overnight the lake can drop 10 degrees (surface temperature) and it just kills any bite you might have been on. Yes rising water is a blessing but when coupled with that temperature drop it takes time for things to get back to a resemblance of normal. Is it any wonder that the Bass Pro’s have Old Hickory listed in the top ten worst tournament lakes to fish? If pros have trouble adjusting to that influx with all their time on the water it makes sense that we Joe’s would be having a nightmare of a time. Your wording made it seem like 30 feet was deep. I am catching fish in 50+ at Casitas and we have shad on the bank. Hard to say what you might have done differently to change your outcome. Deeper/slower/shallower/faster……..Sometimes the wind don’t blow, the grass don’t grow, and the sky isn’t blue and as we all know the bite varies from day to day anyway….Ya might have just got them in a slump that day but I’d boil it down to environment. Where were the shad? Did you look offshore to see the activity level? You prolly just needed Mike or Jeff in the boat!!!!!
